Meet Your Admissions Rep: Liz Phillips

I grew up in Midland, PA. It's a small town, on the Ohio River, about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh. Because it was a steel mill town, it was a huge melting pot where immigrants from all over the world came to work (my family came from Scotland, Ireland, and Poland). My best friend was from a Serbian family, so I spent half of my childhood in a Roman Catholic Church and the other half in a Serbian Orthodox Church. As a result, I have always been interested in meeting new people and learning about different cultures. I think this eventually led to my study of Spanish at UGA and subsequent travel to Europe after graduation. It will always be a fascination of mine.

My dad got laid off when I was about 12, so we moved to New York for a short time until he got a job in Georgia, and we've been here ever since. I went to high school in Augusta, college in Athens, and now on to Atlanta. I think I'm slowly making my way to the west coast. My immediate family is still in Augusta and relatives are still mostly in PA. I have an older sister who is getting married in October.

I graduated from UGA with a degree in Advertising and Spanish minor. Afterwards, I traveled to Sevilla, Spain and interned with an arts and entertainment magazine (same idea as Creative Loafing but much smaller), called El Giraldillo. I actually got to interview the nanny who lived and worked in the Dakota, in NYC, with John Lennon and helped raise his children.

After Spain, I returned to Athens and slung drinks until I found a marketing job with a software development company, called Partner Software. They develop map viewing and design software for electric utilities. I liked the job, but really missed working with people face-to-face on a less formal, more "real" level.

So here I am. I really love helping people make the transition to being Portfolio Center students.

Outside of work, I enjoy playing with my two goofy dogs, Ruca and Peanut, catching up with friends, listening to music, anything involving being around the water, and making my boyfriend cook for me.
