CMYK Awards
Just announced, awarding in the upcoming CMYK Magazine national student competition (design section, issue #46, due out February 2010):
First up, Erick Montes’s logo, Belmont, which becomes a new branding moniker created for a line of men’s fragrance.
And, the eco-friendly packaging design for light bulbs with a personality… as designer Leilani Silversten alluded, “They literally speak to you from the shelves.”
Wonderfully frivolous and a refreshingly re-envisioned, Four Paws logo emphasizes the company’s interest in both dog and cat products. Designer Rachel Anscher suggested of her imaginative design, “It shows the love pet owners have for their mischievous animals.”
If you’ve never used Dr. Bonner’s magic all-in-one castile soaps, do yourself a favor and try them (especially the peppermint). Jesse Lutz created a new look for a great product. Her solution reinvigorated the packaging for the soap line where the message had become a bit hard to understand. The new design as it maintains the eclectic feeling, but she’s reestablished the hierarchy so the message is clear and organized.

And, booking it up for a second award-winning design is Erick Montes with his redesign of the classic novel by George Orwell, 1984.
And since you don’t get there without a lot of support and help, a big congratulations and thank you as well to the amazing Portfolio Center instructors (and PC alumni, we are mighty proud to say) who got ‘em there… Carmen Garcia, Heather Kase, and Nicole Riekki.
The work was judged by the award-winning designer Sean Adams, who often reminds neophyte designers about the coolness that can come from working outside your comfort zone. As he says, “No risk, no biscuit.” The design firm Adams-Morioka is located in Los Angeles, CA., where they specialize in ‘no hogwash’ design for such notable firms as Disney, Gap, the Getty, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.
Look for these winners appearing soon as the magazine hits the newsstands.
Hank.
