China’s ‘Creative Life’

350 Million people in China are looking in… Portfolio Center steps up as part of the first “prime time” ground-breaking show, “Creative Life,” bringing travel and design to China, and into a synergy featuring the creative community in Atlanta > on the air… interviewed and taped at the “W” hotel downtown and moving right here a day later, as the film crew visited Portfolio Center and filmed a day in the life of who we are and what we’re all about.

Last month, I had the privilege of being a judge for the AIGA Minnesota Design Show print and interactive competition. (The AIGA Chapter in Minnesota is the 4th largest in the country, with about 1400 members.) Fellow jurors Janet Dedonato, Seth Labenz, and David Schuemann and I had the daunting task of adjudicating hundreds of entries from the region’s best and brightest industry talents. Portfolio Center students and alumni are on fire, featuring in journals and annuals, winning awards, making huge entrepreneurial strides. I thought I’d share some of the highlights today.

Portfolio Center had 12 projects included in the 2009 Graphis New Talent annual. Congratulations to Gold winners Amanda Babcock, Audrey Gould, Mike Kelly, Jennifer Peake, Kevin Scarbrough, and Dave Whitling, and a special round of applause to Rachel Strubinger, who won one of only six Platinum awards. Design Ignites Change, Fast Company

Portfolio Center alum and dynamo Alissa Walker has an article about Design Ignites Change published in the current issue of Fast Company. The profile addresses DIC’s founders Mark Randall and Andrea Pellegrino’s efforts to get big business involved in the project, seeking to “prove not only that designers can make a living by working for social causes, but also that corporations can advance causes much faster and more efficiently than non-profits alone.”
