Natchitoches
A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of visiting Northwestern Louisiana State University, where I judged the student show and made a presentation to the Fine and Graphic Arts Program.
What a great bunch of people! It was really inspiring to see so much happening in a small school off the beaten path—smart and driven students, involved and motivated instructors, wonder and curiosity in abundance, everyone with sparkles in their eyes. It reminded me of Portfolio Center.
It also reminded me that there are lots of young people out there hungry for what this industry has to offer. They’re looking for ways to use their creativity, opportunities to communicate, permission to follow their passions. A few thoughtful words can make such a big difference in their lives.
Besides the group pic below, I have received several personal notes thanking me for making the trip and asking me to stay in touch. Those letters mean a lot, and I will continue to stay in touch and watch their progress. I’d love to see a few of them around the ‘Big Table’ at 5:30 a.m. some day, but regardless of what paths they take, I look forward seeing great things from these guys in the future.
By the time I returned home, they’d started their own AIGA chapter.
