The Secret’s Out

Today, David Tann’s response to the previous post. David was one of those students who set his expectations for himself very high, who always did more than was asked of him, and was thankful for every opportunity. He’s an extremely talented designer, a true leader, and as genuine and warm as they come. David married one of his PC classmates, Barbra Gallant, who’s a gifted designer in her own right (also at Abercrombie). They’re expecting their first baby soon. Such are the pieces of a well-earned happy life, falling into place.

David’s note:

Hey Hank,

I was reading the blog, and I just wanted to shoot you an email to catch up with you. It’s been about five months since Jeff and I were down in Atlanta doing our workshop for A&F. In that short amount of time there have been some dramatic changes. As you know, about three months ago I was promoted to manage the marketing for A&F’s newest concept. Well, it’s no longer a secret anymore! The new store is called Gilly Hicks (gillyhicks.com), and we’re gearing up for our spring launch. The last couple of months have been an absolute whirlwind. I honestly can’t believe that I have been given the opportunity to work on a project of this magnitude in such a short amount of time. The learning curve has been steep. I’ve made my fair share of mistakes, but I’m learning a ton and am surrounded by a great group of extremely talented people.

It’s so funny to think back to when I was a student at PC. Never in a thousand years would I have ever imagined that I would be at Abercrombie. Just like everyone else, I had such a preconceived notion of what the company was about. It may sound lame, but coming here was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. I have been given opportunities here that I would never receive anywhere else. How many people can say that they have helped launch a brand for one of the world’s most iconic retailers? The responsibility, and all that comes with it, is something that I do not take lightly. I am extremely appreciative of the fact that the powers that be here trust that I am up for the task. As well, I am equally grateful for all that Portfolio Center has given me. You guys believed in me at times when I was totally unsure of who I was as a person and as a designer. You nurtured me, helped me create a portfolio that I will forever be proud of, and sent me out into the world. In hindsight, I guess that’s what makes PC so great. It is not just an institution… it’s a family!

You’ll be happy to know that there have been quite a few PC alumni who have been involved with the launch of Gilly Hicks. Lonnie Hurley and Julie Simmons have done an amazing job creating graphics for tees. In lieu of not having a designer on staff for the past couple of months, Jen Lee has been integral, freelancing from afar. And as you mentioned earlier, we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Christy Errico. I have to say that her portfolio, design sensibility, and approach to life made quite an impression on the team here. Maybe, sometime in the summer we can come back down to Atlanta and give the students some insight into this new and exciting brand.

So, David I would remember you to a gift you brought to me on a visit back not long after you graduated, as this is a good time to share it with all. You said then it sounded like the experience of Portfolio Center. I believe it does. It sits on my wall today. I often look at it and think of you.

Hank.

PS: Thanks again… for everything! Enjoy the holiday!
