Wingnut
As you might recall, this past winter quarter my Symbols, Metaphors, and Logos class was involved in an exciting project with Three Thieves Winery to brand the company’s new wine, Wingnut.
In addition to their (several) other projects in my class—and the projects from the other four classes they were taking at the time—these guys worked day and night on this real-world assignment. Every student in the group created a potentially viable brand, but only one design could be chosen. (However, one of the label designs led to a spin-off project for one of the students. More about that in a couple of days.)
In the end, the results were two products coming to shelves with our students’ label designs, as well as corks concepted and designed by yet another member of the class. Bonus: over $16,000 in scholarships was awarded.
This sell sheet, recently created by Three Thieves for the December launch of Wingnut into Cost Plus World Market, explains everything:

how about a firehose shout out? yeesh!
Did you see the part that said “more about that in a couple of days,” Larry? Patience, my friend.
yikes. my name is spelled wrong. still cool though.
Right, Rachel, and Hank’s the “Dean.” But whatcha gonna do?
It’s still good.
A-W-E-S-O-M-E
AWESOME, AWESOME - TOTALLY
What do the following things have in common:
Michael Jordan,
Real Madrid & Los Angeles Galaxy-era David Beckham,
The newest Blonde Redhead album,
Caesar’s stabbing,
pairs of chromosomes in a human cell,
Jim Carrey’s last movie,
the element vanadium,
& Dave “Wingnut” Whitling!
Congrats Dave! Awesome work.
This is really one of the coolest projects I’ve seen at PC! It’s freakn’ awesome to be walking down the aisles of World Market and see that and tell someone that I (sort of) know the guy that designed that. But even cooler than that is being the guy that designed it! Congrats Dave!!!
Dave is 23?
Congrats Dave! I can’t wait to see these on the shelf!
It is inspiring to see the principles taught at PC to be applied in the real world. When such an example is performed by people you know, see every day, it becomes even more real. Congrats to all!
Way to go Dave, Rachel and Larry!
mmmm … can’t wait to buy a bottle after crit week. congratulations dave!
It was SO AWESOME working with Three Thieves to develop this wine label. But seeing it for real is AMAZING! Great job Dave and Rach!!! I can’t wait to buy one!
Congratulations to the team for a rousing success.
I have one question.
Hasn’t the term “wingnut” been used to describe political right wingers (as in “rightwingnut”)? Am I the only one that reads left-wing blogs? Or perhaps this was taken into account and dismissed, as most true rightwingnuts probably only drink budwieser…
Congratulations you guys. And big thanks for sending me home with a bunch of wine “that night.”
Congrats to Dave, Rachel and Larry!!! Working on the Three Thieves project was an incredible experience and I can’t wait to buy a bottle [or two] over break to celebrate my famous classmates.
Congrats Dave & Rach!!! The bottle and collateral look fabulous…Charles is in for a real treat with your design + Wingnut wisdom - I’m sure the bottles will fly off the shelves. The class dynamic was fantastic and the Three Thieves project was truly an incredible experience…I really am so happy for you guys. Let’s have another potluck dinner at Britton’s :)
Dave ‘Wingnut’ Whitling..haha. Great job!
Congratulations guys.. when I break by wine-fast… it will be with Wingnut!
