No Rest for the Weary

So while you guys are enjoying the last couple of days of Spring Break, Tireless Hank is on the road, spreading the word at the Y conference in San Diego. He’s been going nonstop.

This is a man with a mission. Make that a capital M-ission. And bank on it—he’ll be no worse for the wear come the first 5:30 a.m. class. Next week?

More about the conference goings-on later, but here’s a bite from UnBeige.

Congratulations, Christian!

Portfolio Center alum Christian Helms just emailed to tell me his friends Modest Mouse, whose new cd packaging was created by The Decoder Ring, debuted at number one on Billboard’s Top 200. “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank” sold 129,000 in its first week.

You can read about this Decoder project and others here.

Christian has had the good fortune to work with plenty of stars since he finished school—folks like Dave Matthews, Neko Case, Interpol, and The Shins. But it wasn’t that long ago that he was still at PC, not altogether convinced it was …more

San Diego Bound

This afternoon, I leave for the sold-out AIGA Y12 Push Conference, where I’m scheduled to speak at 9:20 a.m. Saturday morning. I’ll be talking about one of my favorite topics, Ethics & Aesthetics. I want to thank George Saliaris for spending his entire spring break creating the visuals for my speech. Rest assured, I never forget a good deed.

I’m headed for some perfect bike-riding weather and good company—looking forward to seeing some old friends and PC alumni.

The Cream Always Rises

This is amazing… Portfolio Center Alum Christian Helms has been invited to judge this year’s Communication Arts annual competition. CA is the bible of publications within the creative industry

It wasn’t very long ago Christian was downstairs at 5:30 a.m. at the big table, solving issues or learning to silk screen anti-war posters and applying them up and down Peachtree in the middle of the night.

Widget

I wanted to share a new widget, sent to me by its designer, PC student Hank T, with the following note:

This has been a really rewarding project for me this quarter. Stones Throw Records is a label that I have been really into since the mid-nineties. Their music is very eclectic and original. They’ve done projects with adult swim for the past few years and have recently released a couple of albums in collaboration with Adult Swim. An illustrator over there worked on a project with the guys over at Armchair (on the M5 site I believe). They …more

Symbols, Metaphors & Logos Follow-Up

Dear Class,

Here it is several days later since critiques… and, there are a few comments in follow-up I wish to share with you as the class closes out… first order of biz, I wish to say and it not go unnoticed is you all were an outstanding class and you have much to be proud that you accomplished. And the work you did was superlative… I commend you, and thank you for the honor of letting me be a part of it.
