PHOTOGRAPHY:

PH100: INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

A fundamental course that introduces and establishes a solid understanding of all aspects of the camera, film, metering, processing, and the professional Lab. Also, the art and history of Photography is investigated. Students will cover the technical aspects of shooting with a 35mm camera as well as learn the conceptual process of creating effective, powerful work.

PH101: COMPOSITION, COLOR & LIGHT

The important use of Composition, Color & Light is discussed as the “art” of photography is uncovered. Instructor covers all aspects of lighting still life, landscape/architecture, and people rstanding of the creative photographic process.

PH105: PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS B

Students establish an in-depth understanding of shooting People, Places and Things as they learn about the best locations and backdrops. Location photography is explained and practiced with a 3-day field trip, during which the students push the boundaries of “ultimate” imagery. Alternative cameras (such as the pinhole, Diana, Holga, and Lensbaby) are researched and tested. Metering methods are also checked and refined. Matting of prints to gallery and exhibition standards is explained and demonstrated.

PH106: DIGITAL INKJET PRINTING

The wonders and mysteries of printmaking are explored as students learn to create highly professional images using Photoshop and Epson inkjet printers. Explore paper types, printer profiles, sharpening, adjustments, color management, and much more in this hands-on environment.

PH107: STILL LIFE, NATURAL LIGHT

Students learn the detailed process used to create visually stunning and creative still life images. Instructor covers all aspects, from building a set to choosing a light source and metering.

PH201: STUDIO STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHY & TECHNIQUES

Still life digital photography using tungsten lighting in studio is explained and demonstrated. Students learn to professionally light and “capture” table-top sized objects, from fashion accessories to antique tools. The use of fill-cards and light is explored, as well as advanced metering techniques. Instructor gives in-class demonstrations and evaluates images on an Apple 32” inch display.

PH202: STUDIO LIGHTING & EQUIPMENT TECHNIQUES

Using the DSLR, set-making and continuous tungsten lighting methods for the studio are explained & demonstrated. Students will become comfortable building sets in their own studio spaces, as well as understand the particulars involved in using continuous light sources and filters to create dynamic lighting effects. The captured images are finessed in Photoshop with respect to perspective control, selective focus methods, and much more.

DAD214: PUBLICATION & ART DIRECTION

This course introduces the complexities of multi-page projects. The basics of publication design, including the application of design principles and grid systems are covered, as well as the relationship between typography and image.

705: PHOTOSHOP ADVANCED

This master class in Photoshop sets students above the rest of the pack. Here the student learns advanced Photoshop methods, wrt tools, selections, layers and channels, gradients, filters, the Bridge, and much more.

PH204: VISUAL NARRATIVE B, TUNGSTEN LIGHT

The visual image as a “story,” the message and content of a photograph, is explored within the contest of studio still life photography. Students will establish a mature conceptual method through research into other media, such as illustration and design, challenging traditional methods.

PH302: PEOPLE IN STUDIO

Using the DSLR, students learn portrait and fashion methods in studio, using professional power packs. Strobe lighting techniques and power-pack methods and procedures are studied in depth. Incorporating hair, make-up, and styling with camera and lighting techniques, students gain experience in portrait and fashion photography. Students learn all the relevant Photoshop portrait methods to ensure superior images.

704: FLASH

Students become skilled in the industry’s most advanced authoring environment for creating engaging, interactive websites, digital experiences, and mobile content. They learn to create interactive content rich with video, graphics, and animation.

709: DIGITAL WORKFLOW

The world of the digital workflow is examined using advanced methods of file management on The Bridge in Photoshop and presentation of file types (from RAW, PSD, to jpg’s).

PH304: VISUAL NARRATIVE C, STROBE

Creative methods and techniques using the DSLR camera with strobe equipment are explained. Students utilize mixed light techniques and the art of metering for mixed sources. In-class demonstrations ensure that students fully understand the detailed processes of advanced methods.

PH306: PROFESSIONAL STUDIO LIGHTING & EQUIPMENT

Professional strobe and tungsten lighting equipment is explained. Instructor covers the most state-of-the-art lighting equipment in use today to create the most dynamic images. This class is taught by professionals in one of the largest photographic rental houses in the South.

PH307: ADVANCED LIGHTING METHODS

Creative methods and lighting techniques are pushed. This class includes an off-campus excursion to provide the students with fresh locations in which to shoot.

PH308: PEOPLE ON LOCATION

Photographic methods and techniques of combining strobe, tungsten light, and natural light together are explored by shooting people on location.

706: WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT A

The photographer’s number one method of marketing is the website. Students develop the basic skills by building their own website with the support of the instructor—a master in website development. Students hone all skills pertaining to architecture, design, management, and flow.

703: ILLUSTRATOR

The worlds of photography and art meet as students realize their full artistic expression. Adobe Illustrator CS2 software gives students new creative freedom to execute ideas quickly and powerfully. Students learn to convert bitmaps to vector artwork and paint more intuitively. Tight integration with other software allows students to produce extraordinary graphics for print, video, the web, and mobile devices.

PH401: THEMATIC SHOOTING

This is the final opportunity to shoot as a student before any graduating/business distractions. Students must prepare a presentation of all their work to date and present it to an external photographer. Together with the photographer, the student assesses the weaknesses in his/her portfolio, and determines a set of four good images that will work together to form an anchor (a good solid base) to their final portfolio.

PH403: CUSTOM PORTFOLIO PRODUCTION

The technique of crafting books, book covers, and custom portfolio cases are taught. Unique materials and solutions are explored. Each student designs and builds components for their final portfolio presentation.

PH415 SHOOTING FOR PORTFOLIO

Students must prepare a presentation of all their work to date. The instructor, together with the students (collectively and individually), assesses all their work and determines the beginnings of their portfolios. The instructor may also bring in others: Photographers, Designers, Stylists, and Art Directors, to review and comment on areas such as strength of images; use of color, lighting, styling, and models; and themes.

707: WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT B

Students’ websites are finessed. Sites will be critiqued and massaged in preparation to shock the professional world with the most cutting-edge websites imaginable.

708: DIGITAL VIDEO

Students learn more than just the basics; they explore the nuances of digital video. Assignments include the technical and the art of using digital video and combining the result in After Effects or Flash to produce stunning footage.

833: GRAD PERT

Graduate elects receive academic advisement on the preparation of projects for their final portfolio presentation and engage in an ongoing dialogue about their long-term personal, professional, and creative goals.

834: professional practices

This class teaches students to develop a strategy for marketing themselves as creative resources. The student now fully prepares for business: business plan, website development and marketing, promo cards, business legalities, etc.

835: GRADUATE WORKSHOP

Eighth quarter’s concentration is on perfecting the book and website: all work is scrutinized thoroughly and evaluated for content, variety, and execution. Students present their work to a panel of instructors and other industry members and receive feedback on their websites, portfolios and presentations. The remainder of the quarter is devoted to refining their portfolios before receiving a final review for graduation.

836: GRADUATE ADVISEMENT

With one-on-one guidance of the photography counsel, students determine what is perfect, what needs revision, and what is missing in their portfolios and websites. The objective is the creation of a highly polished portfolio and website that showcases how the graduate handles a variety of formats and projects.
